How to Reconnect Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max to Bluetooth Headphones After Firmware Update

When you install a new firmware version on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the system refreshes many low‑level settings, including the Bluetooth stack. If you use wireless headphones, the pairing information can be cleared, forcing you to reconnect. The process is straightforward, but you need to know the steps to avoid frustration. Below is a detailed, step‑by‑step guide to reconnect your headphones after a firmware update, along with troubleshooting tips for common hiccups.

Understanding the Issue

The iPhone’s firmware update resets cached Bluetooth data for security and compatibility reasons.
This means:

  • Previously paired devices are no longer listed as “Connected.”
  • Your headphones may not appear in the device list.
  • Audio may default back to the phone’s internal speaker until a fresh pairing occurs.

The solution is simply to delete the old connection and establish a new one, as described in the following sections.

Step 1: Confirm the Firmware Update Is Complete

  1. Open Settings
    Navigate to SettingsGeneralSoftware Update.

  2. Check Version Number
The current iOS version should match the one you just installed. If the phone is still downloading or installing, wait until the progress bar clears.

  3. Restart the Device
Even after a successful update, a quick reboot can ensure that all background services reload correctly.
    • Press and hold the side button and either volume button until the slide to power off slider appears.
    • Slide to turn off, then press the side button again to power on.

A fresh start often resolves minor glitches introduced by an update.

Step 2: Verify Headphone Status

  1. Turn On Your Headphones
Make sure they are fully powered and ready to pair. Some models require a short press of the power button to enter pairing mode.

  2. Check Battery Level
Low battery can prevent proper pairing. Charge them if the indicator shows a low level.

  3. Confirm Firmware on Headphones
If your headphones have a companion app, check whether they also need a firmware update. Outdated headphone firmware can cause compatibility problems with newer iOS.

Step 3: Remove the Old Bluetooth Pairing

If your headphones previously appeared in the iPhone’s Bluetooth list, they may still be registered.

  1. Open Bluetooth Settings
    Go to SettingsBluetooth.

  2. Locate Your Headphones
Find the device name under My Devices. It will be listed with a small “i” icon.

  3. Forget the Device
Tap the “i” and then select Forget This Device. Confirm the action when prompted.
This removes all pairing data from the phone, ensuring a clean slate for the new connection.

Step 4: Put Headphones in Pairing Mode

Headphones often use a specific sequence to enter pairing mode. Refer to the user manual for precise instructions. Common methods include:

  • Holding the power button for 5–10 seconds until a light flashes or an audio prompt plays.
  • Pressing a dedicated pair button if the device has one.

Make sure the headphones stay on and in pairing mode for the next step.

Step 5: Pair via the iPhone

  1. Return to Bluetooth Settings
After putting the headphones in pairing mode, the phone will automatically start searching for nearby devices.

  2. Select Your Headphones
When the device appears under Other Devices, tap its name.
    • Some headphones require a PIN or passkey; the default is often “0000” or “1234.”
    • If a code is needed, it will be displayed on the headphone or in the manual.

  3. Wait for Confirmation
A message such as “Your headphones are now connected” should appear.
The device will also be listed under My Devices with a status of Connected.

If the headphones do not show up after a minute, reset them or try a different pairing button sequence.

Step 6: Test Audio Output

  1. Play a Song or Video
Open Music or any media app and play a track.

  2. Verify Sound in Headphones
The audio should now route through the Bluetooth headphones.
If you still hear sound through the phone’s speaker, go back to SettingsBluetooth, tap the “i” next to the device, and choose Set as Default Device.

  3. Check Volume Controls
Use the physical volume buttons or the on‑screen slider to adjust level.
    The headphones should respond accordingly.

Step 7: Adjust Advanced Bluetooth Settings

If you experience latency, dropouts, or poor sound quality, tweak a few advanced options:

  • Audio Routing – In AccessibilityTouchHearing Devices, you can enable Audio Routing to force the phone to send audio through the headphones even when other audio sources are active.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) vs. Classic – Some headphones support both modes. In SettingsBluetooth, select the device and toggle the Bluetooth Low Energy option if available. Classic mode often delivers better audio fidelity.
  • App‑Specific Settings – Certain apps (e.g., streaming services) have their own audio output controls. Make sure they are set to use the phone’s default output.

Step 8: Keep Your Software Updated

Regularly check for both iOS and headphone firmware updates:

  • iOS – Go to SettingsGeneralSoftware Update.
  • Headphones – Use the manufacturer’s companion app or a USB connection to check for firmware. Installing updates can resolve known compatibility issues with new iOS releases.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

Symptom Possible Cause Fix
Headphones do not appear in Bluetooth list Headphones not in pairing mode Reset the device and press the pairing button until the light blinks
Pairing fails with “Cannot connect” Interference or range issue Move closer to the iPhone, remove obstacles, or use the “Forget” then re‑pair method
Audio drops out or stutters Bluetooth congestion Disable other Bluetooth devices, restart the phone, or toggle Airplane mode on/off
Headphones connect but play no sound Mis‑selected audio route In AccessibilityHearing Devices, set the headphones as the default output
Headphones appear but say “Connecting…” endlessly Firmware mismatch Update headphone firmware or roll back to a stable iOS version if the issue persists

Quick‑Reference Checklist

  • [ ] Firmware update finished and phone rebooted
  • [ ] Headphones powered on and in pairing mode
  • [ ] Old pairing forgotten in iPhone settings
  • [ ] New pairing successful and device shows Connected
  • [ ] Audio confirmed through headphones
  • [ ] Advanced settings adjusted if needed
  • [ ] Both iPhone and headphone firmware up to date

If all items are checked and the connection still fails, consider resetting network settings. Warning: This will erase Wi‑Fi passwords and VPN configurations.
To reset: SettingsGeneralTransfer or Reset iPhoneResetReset Network Settings.

When to Seek Professional Help

If you have tried every step above and the headphones still refuse to connect, the issue may lie outside the software realm:

  • Hardware Damage – Physical damage to the headphone’s Bluetooth module.
  • iPhone’s Bluetooth Module – Rare but possible failure of the internal Bluetooth chip.

In such cases, contact Apple Support or the headphone manufacturer’s service center. Provide them with a detailed description of your steps to expedite diagnosis.

Final Thoughts

A firmware update can temporarily disrupt a trusted wireless connection, but the recovery process is usually swift. By following the steps above, you can restore your listening experience with minimal downtime. Remember that regular updates for both devices keep compatibility high and potential bugs low. Enjoy your music, podcasts, and calls in the crisp, wireless comfort that the iPhone 15 Pro Max and your Bluetooth headphones were designed to deliver.

i think the first step is to put the headphones in pairing mode. then open Settings → Bluetooth → find the device in the list, tap the info icon, and choose "Forget This Device." after that, just reconnect like you normally would. also make sure no other device is trying to claim the same Bluetooth address. a few times it was the other phone in my house that kept hijacking the connection.

actually Yaroslav, you forgot to mention that if the headset was previously connected to a different iPhone, you need to reset its pairing via its own menu. also the article didn’t mention that.

I had that same thing last month. My AirPods Max popped out after the update. I had to put them in pairing mode and they worked again.

the firmware update actually flushes the Bluetooth L2CAP connection table, so you must run the pairing wizard again. Settings → Bluetooth → tap the i next to the device → Forget This Device → then pair. Also make sure Background App Refresh is off for the headphone app, or else it will keep trying to reconnect.

Good point Aurelia, but the article said Background App Refresh might not be relevant. I think it's a bit confusing.

Bluetooth stack is not affected by firmware updates, dude. it's just a bug in the headphones.

Actually Lazzaro, the stack is refreshed; that's why you lose pairing. The article is right.
