Solving Bluetooth Connectivity Problems on Jabra Elite 85h Noise Cancelling Earbuds

Bluetooth connectivity issues can be frustrating, especially when you rely on high‑quality earbuds for work, travel, or daily listening. The Jabra Elite 85h noise‑cancelling earbuds are engineered for reliable performance, yet even the most polished devices can encounter hiccups. Below is a comprehensive guide that walks you through diagnosing, troubleshooting, and ultimately restoring a stable connection between your Jabra Elite 85h and any Bluetooth‑enabled device.

Understanding the Jabra Elite 85h Bluetooth Architecture

The Elite 85h uses Bluetooth 5.0, which offers improved range, lower latency, and better energy efficiency compared to older versions. The earbuds run the proprietary Jabra Elite Connect app, which handles firmware updates, profile settings, and custom equalisation. Knowing the fundamental layers of the Bluetooth stack helps you pinpoint where a problem might arise:

  1. Physical Layer – Radio hardware in the earbuds and the host device.
  2. Link Layer – Pairing and pairing state maintenance.
  3. Protocol Layer – Audio streaming protocols (A2DP, HFP, HSP).
  4. Application Layer – The app‑level controls and firmware.

When you encounter a drop‑out, a failed pairing, or an audio delay, think about which layer is likely responsible. This perspective keeps your troubleshooting focused and efficient.

Quick Checklist Before You Dive Deeper

Before you start digging into more involved steps, run through this quick checklist to cover the most common, easily fixable problems.

  • Power Levels – Verify that both earbuds are fully charged and that the charging case is not the source of the issue.
  • Bluetooth Enabled – Confirm that Bluetooth is turned on on the host device and that no airplane mode is active.
  • Proximity – Make sure you are within 10 feet (3 metres) of the host; signal attenuation is significant beyond this range.
  • Device Compatibility – Ensure the host device’s operating system is up to date and that it supports Bluetooth 5.0 or later.
  • Interference Check – Move away from Wi‑Fi routers, microwave ovens, and other RF sources that can interfere with the 2.4 GHz band.

If the issue persists after this preliminary sweep, proceed to the detailed sections below.

Common Causes of Connectivity Issues

Symptom Likely Cause Quick Fix
Pairing fails Old or corrupted Bluetooth pairings stored on the host Remove all Jabra devices from Bluetooth settings
Intermittent drop‑outs Firmware mismatch between earbuds and host Update the Jabra firmware via the app
No audio output Audio routing defaults to another device Manually select the earbuds in the audio settings
One earbud not working Battery or speaker module fault Charge both earbuds and reset the pair
High latency Outdated OS or conflicting apps Restart host device and close background audio apps

Step‑by‑Step Troubleshooting Guide

1. Re‑pairing Your Jabra Elite 85h

  1. Open the Bluetooth menu on your host device.
  2. Tap on Forget or Remove for any existing Jabra Elite 85h entries.
  3. Place the earbuds into pairing mode:
    • Close the case cover to power them on and activate the pairing icon.
    • Press the button on each earbud until you hear the pairing tone.
  4. In the host Bluetooth list, select the Jabra Elite 85h and confirm any prompts.
  5. Once connected, open the Jabra Connect app to ensure the firmware status is up to date.

If the earbuds still refuse to pair, move to the next step.

2. Resetting the Earbuds

A factory reset restores the default settings and clears corrupted data.

  1. Ensure both earbuds are off.
  2. Press and hold the button on each earbud for 10 seconds until the LED flashes amber twice.
  3. Release the buttons. The earbuds will power on and reconnect automatically to the host if pairing data remains stored.
  4. If they fail to reconnect, repeat the pairing process.

Tip: After a reset, immediately check the Jabra Connect app to confirm that the firmware is the latest version. If not, download the update.

3. Checking and Updating Firmware

Firmware updates can resolve many subtle bugs, including connection stability.

  1. Download and install the latest Jabra Connect app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Open the app, and it should detect your earbuds automatically.
  3. Follow the on‑screen instructions to download and install the firmware.
  4. After the update, restart both the earbuds and the host device.

If the earbuds are still unstable after a firmware update, proceed to network interference checks.

4. Eliminating Radio Interference

Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, which is crowded. Interference from Wi‑Fi, cordless phones, or even other Bluetooth devices can cause jitter or disconnections.

  • Move Away from Wi‑Fi Routers – Position yourself at least 5 metres from the router.
  • Switch Wi‑Fi Channels – If you own the router, change its channel to 1, 6, or 11 to reduce overlap.
  • Turn Off Unnecessary Devices – Disable other Bluetooth peripherals temporarily to see if the problem persists.
  • Use the 5 GHz Band – If you have dual‑band Wi‑Fi, connect your laptop or smartphone to the 5 GHz network, reducing contention on 2.4 GHz.

5. Testing on a Different Host Device

To isolate whether the issue lies with the earbuds or the host:

  1. Pair the earbuds with a second device (another smartphone, tablet, or laptop).
  2. Observe if the same symptoms occur.
  • If the connection works on the second device: The problem is likely with the original host device’s Bluetooth stack or settings.
  • If the issue persists on all devices: The earbuds themselves may have a hardware fault.

6. Using the Jabra Connect App’s Diagnostics

The app includes diagnostic tools:

  • Signal Strength – View the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) to determine how strong the connection is.
  • Battery Health – Check each earbud’s battery level and the charging case status.
  • Audio Quality Test – Play a test tone to see if audio drops or is delayed.

Run these diagnostics and note any abnormal values. They can guide you to a more specific fix.

7. Checking Audio Profile Settings

Sometimes the host device defaults to the wrong audio profile, causing no sound or echo.

  • On Android: Go to Settings > Connected devices > Bluetooth > Advanced > Audio output and select the Jabra earbuds.
  • On iOS: Tap the i icon next to the earbuds in the Bluetooth list and ensure Audio is set to the Jabra device.

If the host device has multiple audio output options (e.g., speakers, headphones, Bluetooth), make sure the earbuds are the active sink.

8. Managing Power Saving Features

Modern operating systems aggressively manage power for Bluetooth. These settings can inadvertently disable or throttle Bluetooth.

  • Android – Disable Battery saver or set Bluetooth to Always on under Developer options.
  • iOS – Turn off Low Power Mode to ensure Bluetooth maintains full throughput.
  • Windows 10/11 – Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep and change the Sleep settings to Never while testing.

9. Firmware Rollback (Advanced)

If a recent firmware update introduces a problem, rolling back to a previous stable version may help. Unfortunately, Jabra’s firmware is usually forward‑only. However, you can attempt a re‑flash of the latest firmware, which often resolves lingering issues.

  • Open Jabra Connect.
  • Go to Device > Update.
  • If a new update appears, download and install it even if the earbuds claim they are already updated.

10. Contacting Support

If all else fails, the earbuds might have a hardware defect (e.g., a damaged driver or Bluetooth module). Reach out to Jabra support:

  • Provide a detailed description of the problem and the steps you have already taken.
  • Include the model number, serial number, and the firmware version.
  • If possible, attach screenshots of the diagnostic logs from the app.

Jabra’s warranty typically covers hardware faults for two years from the date of purchase.

Tips for Maintaining a Stable Connection

  • Regularly Charge – Keep both earbuds charged to at least 30 % to avoid performance dips.
  • Avoid Extreme Temperatures – Heat can degrade battery performance; keep the earbuds out of direct sunlight.
  • Clean the Earbuds – Dust and earwax buildup can interfere with the magnetic contacts that secure the earbuds.
  • Update All Devices – Keep your host’s OS and any related apps updated.
  • Reboot When Needed – A simple restart of the host device can clear many transient Bluetooth issues.

Final Thoughts

Bluetooth connectivity problems with the Jabra Elite 85h often stem from minor software glitches, environmental interference, or forgotten pairing data. By methodically checking each layer of the Bluetooth stack—from power levels and firmware to signal interference and device settings—you can usually pinpoint and resolve the issue without professional help.

Remember that the earbuds are designed to be robust for everyday use. Most problems are temporary and correctable with a quick reset or firmware update. If you still experience trouble after exhausting the steps above, it’s likely a hardware defect, and you should contact Jabra for repair or replacement under warranty.

After trying everything, I found that the only thing that finally gave me a stable connection was disabling the 'Optimize Battery Usage' setting for the Jabra app on Android. Android's aggressive power saving was cutting off the Bluetooth radio intermittently. Once I turned that off, the dropouts stopped completely. If you’re on iOS, the equivalent is to disable ‘Background App Refresh’ for the Jabra app. Combine that with a full reset and the results are solid.

I followed the troubleshooting steps and found that the ‘reset network settings’ on Android solved a weird latency issue. On iOS you have to toggle ‘Bluetooth’ off, then enable ‘Airplane Mode’ for a few seconds before turning Bluetooth back on. Also make sure the earbuds are fully charged; low battery can cause the radio to act flaky. If you’re still having problems, try unpairing from all devices, then pair only with the phone you use most. I documented this on my blog with screenshots.

The problem is you’re using a cheap charger. The Elite 85h need at least 1.5A to charge the case fully, otherwise the Bluetooth module glitches.

reinstalling wont touch the Bluetooth stack. The reset clears the internal cache. In my case the app reinstall did nothing.

i think the article miss the point, you gotta delete the pairing history on the phone and also clear the cache from the Jabra app, that is the real fix.
SV
Svetlana 2 months ago
Actually the cache clear is part of the reset procedure on the earbuds themselves. Deleting pairing history is helpful but not always required.
