Addressing the No Page Print Error on a Canon PIXMA TR8520

Understanding the No Page Print Error on the Canon PIXMA TR8520

When you try to print a document and the printer screen flashes “No Page Print”, the frustration is immediate. The Canon PIXMA TR8520, a popular all‑in‑one device for home offices, can sometimes display this error for reasons that range from simple connectivity issues to more complex firmware bugs. This guide dives deep into the causes, offers clear step‑by‑step troubleshooting, and explains how to prevent the error from recurring.

What Does the “No Page Print” Message Mean?

The No Page Print error typically indicates that the printer is unable to receive or process the print job from the computer or mobile device. Unlike the more common “Paper Jam” or “Ink Low” messages, this error is a communication glitch rather than a mechanical failure.

Common scenarios that trigger the error include:

  • The printer is not properly connected to the network or the host device.
  • The driver or firmware on either the printer or the host computer is outdated.
  • The print job was sent to the wrong printer queue.
  • There is a corruption in the print driver or the print spooler.

Knowing these potential triggers helps you focus your troubleshooting efforts efficiently.

Preliminary Checks

Before diving into detailed diagnostics, verify the following:

Item Check Why It Matters
Power Ensure the printer’s power cable is firmly plugged in and the LED indicator is on. The printer must be fully powered to accept jobs.
Network Connection Confirm that the Wi‑Fi or Ethernet cable is active. On the printer’s control panel, look for a “Network” icon that shows signal strength. A weak or absent network link prevents the printer from receiving jobs.
USB Cable If using a USB connection, test the cable on another port or use a known good cable. Faulty cables can interrupt data transfer.
Paper Tray Open the paper tray and confirm there is sufficient paper loaded correctly. A missing or mis‑loaded sheet can trigger errors that mask as communication failures.
Ink Levels Check the ink cartridge levels via the printer’s LCD. Low ink may cause a different error but can sometimes coexist with communication problems.

If all of the above checks pass, proceed to the troubleshooting steps below.

Step‑by‑Step Troubleshooting

1. Restart Both Devices

A simple reboot can clear temporary glitches in the printer’s firmware or the computer’s print spooler.

  • Printer: Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the device shuts down. Wait 30 seconds, then press the power button again.
  • Computer/Tablet: Reboot the operating system or simply close the printer application and restart it.

After rebooting, attempt a test print. If the error persists, move on to the next step.

2. Verify the Printer is Set as Default

If multiple printers are connected to your network, the job may be routed to the wrong device.

  1. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers on Windows or System Preferences > Printers & Scanners on macOS.
  2. Right‑click or click the gear icon on the Canon PIXMA TR8520 and select Set as default printer.
  3. Retry the print job.

3. Update Firmware and Drivers

Outdated firmware or drivers are common culprits. Follow these procedures:

Firmware Update

  1. On the printer’s LCD, go to Settings > Device Info > Printer Settings > Check for Update.
  2. If an update is available, the printer will automatically download and install it. Ensure you keep the device powered during the process.

Driver Update

  • Windows:

    1. Visit Canon’s official support website.
    2. Search for PIXMA TR8520 and download the latest driver package.
    3. Run the installer and follow the prompts.
  • macOS:

    1. Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
    2. Select the Canon printer, click the Options & Supplies button, then click Driver and choose Download.
    3. Install the new driver.

After updating, perform a test print.

4. Re‑Install the Printer

If updates do not resolve the error, uninstalling and reinstalling the printer can refresh the configuration.

Windows

  1. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Right‑click the Canon printer and choose Remove device.
  3. Click Add a printer and let Windows detect the device automatically. If it is not detected, use the Add a local printer option and specify the correct port.

macOS

  1. Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Click the minus button beneath the list to delete the printer.
  3. Click the plus button, select Add and allow the system to discover the Canon device.

Once re‑installed, attempt to print again.

5. Test Using Canon’s Smart App

If the problem appears to be application‑specific, try printing via the Canon Smart App.

  1. Download the Canon Smart App from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Open the app and add the printer following the on‑screen instructions.
  3. Choose a document and print. If the Smart App works, the issue likely lies in the original application or driver configuration.

6. Check for Printer Queue Issues

On Windows, a stuck job can block subsequent prints.

  1. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Right‑click the Canon printer and select See what’s printing.
  3. In the window that opens, click Printer in the menu bar and choose Cancel All Documents.
  4. Confirm cancellation and try printing again.

7. Verify Network Settings

If the printer is on Wi‑Fi, ensure the network environment is stable.

  • Wi‑Fi Range: Move the printer closer to the router to eliminate weak signal issues.
  • IP Conflict: Verify the printer’s IP address is unique on the network. Use Settings > Network > IP Address on the printer to view or change it.
  • Router Settings: Restart the router and, if possible, assign a static IP to the printer to avoid address changes.

8. Reset the Printer to Factory Settings

As a last resort, perform a factory reset.

  1. On the printer’s LCD, go to Settings > Reset > Factory Reset.
  2. Confirm the reset. The printer will return to its default configuration, requiring you to re‑add it to your network.

After resetting, repeat the earlier steps to reinstall the printer and driver.

Preventing Future “No Page Print” Errors

Once the error is resolved, keep it from reappearing by implementing the following best practices:

  • Regular Firmware Updates: Enable automatic updates or schedule quarterly checks to keep the firmware current.
  • Keep Drivers Fresh: Reinstall drivers whenever you upgrade your operating system.
  • Network Monitoring: Use a Wi‑Fi extender or mesh system if the printer frequently loses signal.
  • Printer Maintenance: Perform periodic cleaning of the ink nozzles and print heads using Canon’s cleaning utilities.
  • Spooler Health: On Windows, consider enabling the Print Spooler service to restart automatically in case of failure.

I finally got the printer to work after cleaning the paper feed rollers. The rollers were covered in a thin film of dust and a bit of dried ink. I used a lint‑free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol, spun the rollers a few times and the printer started feeding paper again. The "No Page Print" message disappeared after that.

Has anyone tried printing via USB when the error shows? My printer works fine on USB but not over Wi‑Fi.

I did the same test. The USB cable I used is brand new and passes the continuity test, so the issue is definitely wireless‑related.

The article missed the part where a recent firmware update (v1.05) introduced a bug that incorrectly reads the paper sensor when the printer’s internal temperature is above 45 °C. The workaround is to flash the previous stable firmware (v1.04) using the USB boot mode. Details are in the Canon tech notes: hold the power button for 5 seconds while plugging the USB cable, then run the firmware flash utility from a PC.

I dug around and found the cartridge contacts were dusty. I took the black cartridge out, blew on the copper pads and re‑seated it. After that the printer stopped flashing "No Page Print". Also make sure the cartridge isn’t past its date, old ink can cause all sorts of false errors.

Are you sure it isn’t a firmware bug? I called Canon support and they said the error is a hardware thing. I think you’re just lucky.

Try doing a full network reset from the settings menu, then reconnect to your router. Sometimes the router's DHCP table holds a stale IP.

Sure, just reinstall the firmware, why not? Next they'll tell us to turn the printer off and on again.

The article didn't mention the print queue getting stuck. On Windows, if a job stays in the queue with a red exclamation, the printer will flash "No Page Print" even though it's ready. Clearing the queue or restarting the print spooler service fixes it.

Good point, Gennadi. I hit the same snag last week. A quick "net stop spooler && net start spooler" does the trick.

Leandro, try uninstalling the driver and reinstalling the latest from Canon's site. The older driver sometimes leaves ghost processes that cause the error.

i think its the wifi module, the printer loses connection mid‑job and just shows no page print. try resetting the network settings in the menu.
